When first introduced, in 1979, 10,000 9-liter cases (90,000 liters) were sold in the U.S. Since then, ABSOLUT VODKA has achieved significant worldwide sales growth, and is today the world’s third largest spirit brand, available in 126 markets.
But the story of ABSOLUT VODKA started way before 1979: In 1879 Lars Olsson Smith, “the King of Vodka”, registered the ABSOLUT VODKA trademark with his Absolut Rent Brännvin (Absolute Pure Vodka). He introduced a new, superior, way of distilling the vodka, the continuous distillation process. We still distill ABSOLUT VODKA through this process, although it has been further developed. It is Lars Olsson Smith’s portrait that you find on the medallion of every bottle of ABSOLUT VODKA.
Every drop of ABSOLUT VODKA comes from one source. All production of ABSOLUT VODKA is done at the distilleries near Åhus in southern Sweden. All grain used in the production is winter wheat from the nearby fields. The water comes from our own deep well, also in Åhus. Producing its vodka in one location using local raw materials gives V&S Absolut Spirits complete control of all stages of production and ensures that every drop meets our high quality standard.
The ABSOLUT VODKA story can be read on every bottle:
This superb vodka was distilled from grain grown in the rich fields of southern Sweden. It has been produced at the famous old distilleries near Åhus. 400 years of Swedish tradition. Vodka has been sold under the name ABSOLUT since 1879.
