Bread on a Stick with Spicy Sausage and Tartar Sauce

Loading ...
This dough is often called “scout bread” because it can be baked on a bonfire. You mix the dry ingredients at home, put it in a plastic bag and bring it with you on your trek in the wilderness. When it’s time for baking, you just add water, milk or buttermilk and butter. Work it through the dough, wind it around a stick and bake it over an open fire. Pretty cool! I did it many times myself during my scouting days. This recipe includes the “hotdogs”.

Bread on a Stick with Spicy Sausage and Tartar Sauce
Servings:
4
PREPARATION:
- 1
Bread on a stick: Mix all the dry ingredients with the butter until the mixture is rather grainy. Stir in the liquid of choice and mix into a doughy consistency. Separate the dough into pieces and roll each piece into a sausage shape.
- 2
The Sauce: Mix all of the sauce ingredients and season with salt and pepper.
- 3
Roll one slice of bacon and one slice of cheese around each sausage. Then twist the dough around the whole thing and attach it to a stick. Be careful not to cook it too close to the fire. The sausage can easily burst and that would be a shame!
- 4
Grill until done and enjoy it with the Tartar sauce.
