DALEN IN TELEMARK
Think that you can sail the waterway from the coast to the foot of the mountainous Hardangervidda in the middle of Telemark!
The Telemark Canal winds its way between the mountains and at the end of the fjord you find Dalen – lying in the warm valley between high cliffs and surrounded by wonderful nature. Dalen and the area around can tempt you with a rich choice of cultural activities. We have mines, a stave church from 1200, and some of the oldest wooden buildings to be found. You can find cultural treasures along the roadside or visit our museums. If you wish to stay here we have the famous Dalen Hotel – a fairytale experience built for the first tourists who came here at the beginning of the 1800’s. At that time their goal was to visit Raven Gorge.
The gorge has a 350-meter sheer drop down to the river Tokkeåi below! The Raven Gorge has an unusual air current, which makes it possible to throw a banknote over the edge and have it blown back by the wind rising up the face of the cliff!
