Oslo is also known for being a “City of contrasts and multitude”. Oslo surprises many visitors with its intimacy. Although Oslo is an international capital it is only minutes from the city centre to the surrounding forests and the fjord.
The city’s unique atmosphere is created by its beautiful natural surroundings, its varied architecture, and its multinational inhabitants representing national and international cultures. Oslo is a city of growth and development whose pulsating centre has become a natural choice for many events and arrangements.
Among the annual events is the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony that takes place in the City Hall, the Holmenkollen Ski Festival known almost throughout the world, and Norway Cup — the world’s largest soccer tournament for boys and girls aged 10 – 18 years. Over the last years Oslo has become an attractive tourist- and convention city, its choice of hotels and restaurants as well as its cultural- and entertainment programmes are all fully on par with any European capital. Even walking down main street Karl Johan can be an exciting experience.
A Winter Capital
The world famous Holmenkollen ski jump and the Winter Olympics in 1952 have led many to proclaim Oslo the capital of all winter capitals. However, Oslo is just as much a summer city with all the features that we associate with the joys of summer.
Home of Cultural Giants
Oslo is the home of cultural giants like the painter Edvard Munch, the sculptor Gustav Vigeland, Thor Heyerdahl the explorer and writer Henrik Ibsen. Each of them has his own museum with his collections. Among other famous people who lived and worked in Oslo we find the mathematician Niels Henrik Abel, who is in a category of his own, as well as the polar explorers Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen. We would also like to mention sports celebrities like Sonja Henie, the figure skater, and the marathon runner Grete Waitz, the marathoner.
