Heat and spice your wine! Mulled Wine ("Gløgg") is a typical Christmas drink in Norway.

INGREDIENTS:

2 bottles (6 cups) of red wine

½ cup (1 dl) port wine

½ cup (1 dl) blackcurrant syrup

2-3 tbs. honey or sugar

1 cinnamon stick

4-6 cloves

3-4 cardamom seeds

4 whole allspice

2-4 peppercorns

1 bay leaf

0.2 lb. (100 g) raisins

0.2 lb. (100 g) almonds, coarsely chopped

3 inches (7-8 cm) zest of organic orange

PREPARATION:

Mulled Wine (“Gløgg”) is a typical Christmas drink in Norway. It is a drink that has survived from Medieval times, when all wines that reached as far as Norway would be oxidized and acidic, and those who could afford it would try to dress the wine up with honey and spices. I think that the gløgg is best when it is not too sweet.

  • Gently heat 2 cups (5 dl) of wine and spices in a pot and leave it for 10 minutes.

  • Add the remaining ingredients and heat up to maximum 172 F (78 C). Serve in small coffee cups. Enjoy!
